Advanced Water Treatment Operator Workshop

Description:
This four-day Advanced Water Treatment workshop will cover the various steps necessary to go from wastewater to pure water.

The specific areas will include water reuse, Indirect Potable Reuse (IPR), brackish water treatment, desalination, surface water augmentation, groundwater recharge and best available technologies for specific water problems.  It will cover the concepts of a multiple barrier approach to water purification.  It will also cover supporting technologies such as instrumentation and control, PLC theory and operations, and basic SCADA usage and technology.

These barriers include disinfection, physical separation, and other advanced processes.  It will also cover the supporting technologies used in advanced water treatment including Ion Exchange, Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), Iron and Manganese Removal, Chlorine and Chlorine Dioxide, Biofiltration, Ozonation, Membrane Filters, Membrane Bioreactors, Reverse Osmosis, Ultraviolet Light, and Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP).

This workshop is not an AWTO certification review nor is it an AWTO design or regulation compliance workshop but will help the participants learn the technologies and key points that can be applied to the AWTO exam in a broader sense.

This class is 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, September 8-9 and September 15-16.
Earn up to 32 contact hours (based on attendance).

Security:
  • Upon arrival, guests will check in with the officer at the entrance gate and will then be directed to the proper location.
  • All participants must have a government-issued ID (driver's license or passport) to enter.  Those without proper identification will not be allowed in the facility or on the tour.
Attire:
  • All participants must wear closed-toe shoes and pants; shorts, dresses, or high heels are not permitted.
  • Guests should be prepared to walk unaided and climb stairs.  Please let us know in advance of any mobility concerns.
  • The site will provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.

Henry Palechek is a retired water utility supervisor with 34 ½ years of public service. He started his water career at the City of San Diego in 1988 and finished it at Helix Water District. Helix Water District has a conventional 106 MGD water treatment plant with ozone as its primary disinfectant, a 50 square mile water distribution system, serving about 500,000 connections including delivering water to three other districts. Henry has been teaching community college classes in water technology since 1993.  He holds a BS degree in Information Systems and four AS degrees in Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Electronic Technology, and Computer Science. He currently holds a California T5 and D3 certification and an AWWA CA/NV AWTO 5.

All fees are non-refundable thereafter. Transfers are based on availability. No transfer requests will be authorized if they are not received more than 15 days prior to class start date. A 100% refund or credit of your registration fee will be issued if a class is canceled by the Section.
