Nature of Chemical Corrosion-RC

Member $195 / Non-member $295

Description:
This workshop will present the vast and complex effects of corrosion upon Utility operations, infrastructure and equipment e.g.:
  • Ductile iron
  • Pre-stressed concrete pipe
  • Valves and water storage contaminant of scale
Present the types of corrosion:
  • Chemical
  • Stress-flexure
  • Weathering-atmospheric
  • Microbiological
  • Environment (aerobic/anaerobic)
Detail the electrochemical reactions of corrosion, conditions and agents which accelerate or mitigate material decomposition including passivation, scaling.  Present the galvanic electro potentials (nobility) of alloys and metals as well the chemical resistivity and susceptibility of elastomers and ceramic coatings.  Describe the pertinent basic equations of electricity:
  • Resistance
  • Current
  • Potential (Nernst Energy EQN)
Depict the typical corrosive galvanic cells incidental or at risk to the water utility industry.  Impart the methods and details of protection against corrosion:
  • Coating
  • Inhibition
  • Cathodic (sacrificial anodes)
Exhibit the compatibility, suitability, selection and inspection methods of construction materials:
  • Stainless steels
  • Alloys (brass)
  • Plastics (epoxy, urethane)
  • Etc.
Display the comparative methods to assess the benefits, costs-liabilities and economics of corrosion:
  • Prevention
  • Control
  • Mitigation
Offer straightforward methods for deriving cost estimates to fiscally assess and compare corrosion control options, i.e.:
  • Annualized Life Cost from capital investment
  • O&M to salvage

This class is 7:30 am - 4:30 pm.
