Description:
PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a large group of man-made chemicals that have been used in various industrial and consumer applications since the 1940s.  They are characterized by a carbon chain backbone, bonding carbon atoms to fluorine atoms, creating a solid and stable chemical structure.  This unique structure gives PFAS remarkable properties, such as water and oil resistance, along with heat and chemical stability.  This course focuses on the chemicals found in this group of what are called "forever chemicals".  It outlines the sources of these chemicals and where they are found in the environment.  These chemicals are also in a wide variety of products that people use every day.  These products will be identified along with the risks to human health and the environmental risks that are associated with them.  Finally, the new EPA regulations propagated in April of this year are explained, and the treatment regiments that can be applied to remove them from drinking water are discussed.  Also disposal strategies for the treatment waste stream are explores.

Learning Objectives:
After completion of this class, you should be able to:
  • Describe the history of the usage of PFAS type compounds.
  • Outline the development of EPA PFAS regulations.
  • Explain the toxic effects of PFAS type compounds on human health & the environment.
  • Describe the treatment methods that are used to remove PFAS type compounds from water & wastewater effluents.
