Description:
Water and Wastewater Quality sampling is an essential and integral part of every utility's compliance and operational activity.  This workshop provides participants with both classroom instruction and hands-on activities.  Essential for the beginner, and a great refresher for those who collect samples regularly.  An opportunity to eliminate habits that could compromise sample integrity and gain consistency in the sampling process within and between utilities.

This training is appropriate for both water and wastewater operators.

This training was originally presented as a two-day workshop, which has been streamlined to provide operators with the same information in one day to better serve utility needs.

Topics included in this workshop:
  • Regulations and ethics
  • Sampling goals and standards
  • Managing sample integrity for field and lab samples
  • Sample collection safety
  • Colorimeter use, maintenance, and interferences
  • Chains of Custody - what are they, how should they be used, legal implications
  • Reviews of Lab Sample Types, focusing on the most common lab samples:
    • Bacteriological Sampling
    • Volatile Chemicals (VOCs/SOCs)
    • Inorganics
    • Plus information pertaining to more than 20 other common lab samples
  • Review of Field Sample Types, focusing on:
    • Chlorine/Chloramine
    • pH
    • Temperature
The practical portions of the workshop include using a colorimeter correctly to determine low range and high range reads; demonstrating collection of bacteriological samples and VOCs; practicing field filtration.

Participants should bring a working chlorine colorimeter, fresh DPD reagents for free and total chlorine, and two or more 10 ml glass sample cells; and two or more polycarbonate cells.  Other materials will be provided.
