The Ripple Effect: Water Meters - Beyond Revenue

The Ripple Effect: Navigating Water through Committees

Thank you to the Meters Committee and Michele Harvey for presenting the September Committee webinar.

Speaker Spotlight:

Michele Harvey is a respected industry expert in metering and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), with over 15 years of experience supporting water utilities in selecting, deploying, and sustaining smart technologies. Leveraging her engineering background, Michele has worked with hundreds of utilities to assess their needs, match them with the right solutions, and provide hands-on training and long-term support throughout implementation.

In the past five years, Michele has expanded her focus to include a broader range of water loss management technologies—such as leak detection, pressure management, and smart flushing—helping utilities optimize performance and conserve resources. Based in Sacramento, California, she is the Meter Committee Chair for the California-Nevada Section of AWWA and serves on both the Water Loss Control and the Water Management & Efficiency Committees.

Michele founded Water Intelligence Specialists to address the critical gaps she observed in the technology adoption process—particularly the need for unbiased education, process integration, and data system support. Through her work, she empowers utilities to make informed decisions and achieve long-term success in water loss control and distribution management.

Title:  Water Meters - Beyond Revenue

Description:
Water meters are the foundations of effective distribution system management.  They provide the data utilities need to account for every gallon of water produced, delivered, and used.  Accurate metering enables utilities to bill customers fairly, detect leaks, reduce non-revenue water, and make informed decisions about infrastructure investments.  Beyond revenue, meters support regulatory compliance, conservation goals, and customer engagement.  Without them, utilities are essentially operating blind-unable to track usage patterns, identify losses, or measure the success of efficiency programs.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Why utilities measure water supply and usage.
  • How the various departments at utility's use meter data and associated infrastructure to improve system management.
  • The different types of meters needed for specific applications within the utilities system.
