This series is an in-depth study of water distribution systems.  It will provide a comprehensive understanding of how water is delivered from the treated water source(s) to the consumer's tap.  This series is designed to equip both new and experienced water distribution system operators and staff with the training and knowledge needed to effectively understand and manage their systems.  We'll examine the key elements of water distribution systems including infrastructure, tank operations, pressure zones, pipeline usage, maintenance strategies, system monitoring and control systems.  Participants will walk away with actionable knowledge for improving their systems, using best practices to meet challenges, and an understanding of latest advancements in technology.

Key Topics Include:
  • Introduction to Water Treatment and Distribution Systems
    • Types of water sources (groundwater, surface water, brackish water and desalination)
    • Water quality standards and regulations
    • Water treatment processes (filtration, chlorination, etc.)
    • Importance of water distribution
    • Key components of a water distribution system (e.g., pipes, pumps, valves, reservoirs, meters)
  • Drinking Water Regulations, Distribution Standards and Safety Standards
    • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
    • The National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWRs)
    • California Primacy
    • Regulations that set maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for various substances
    • Looking at acute health risks
    • Distribution practices that protect public health
    • Compliance with environmental laws
  • Design Principles of Water Distribution Systems
    • Hydraulic principles: flow, pressure, velocity
    • Types of distribution networks (looped, branched, grid systems)
    • Design considerations: pipe sizing, materials, pressure zones
    • Piping Materials and Installation
  • Water Distribution System Operations
    • Monitoring and controlling water pressure and flow
    • Pump stations and their role in the system
    • Emergency operations and contingency plans
    • Water Loss Management
    • Causes of water loss
    • Methods of detecting and fixing leaks
    • Strategies for reducing non-revenue water
  • Expansion, Maintenance and Repair of Water Distribution Systems
    • Routine maintenance practices
    • Troubleshooting common issues
    • System upgrades and expansions
    • Using groundwater
